Mission
At Aperio Scientific, my mission is to help researchers communicate complex scientific ideas more clearly through precise writing and thoughtful presentation design.
Bio
I’m Reid Larsen, the Founder of Aperio Scientific where I work as a Scientific Writer and Communications Consultant. I earned my PhD from UCSD in Biomedical Sciences in 2025 in the labs of Dr. Richard Daneman and Dr. Jeffrey Esko. My PhD research focused on the blood-brain barrier glycocalyx, the sugar-rich lining on the surface of the brain’s blood vessels.
During my PhD, scientific communication quickly became the part of my training that I enjoyed most. I spent a lot of time refining presentations, hand-designing figures, and thinking carefully about what the audience knew and how best to tell the story behind the data. That focus translated into several presentation and poster awards, invited talks, and more than $100,000 in competitive fellowship funding. Over the years, I also spent a lot of time helping labmates and colleagues improve their talks and sharpen the stories they were trying to tell. It was work I enjoyed and wanted to continue beyond my PhD, so I started Aperio Scientific to do just that.
Through Aperio Scientific, I am able pursue this passion and apply my skill set to support researchers in their scientific communications efforts. I work closely with clients to decide what matters most, how to structure the story, and how to present data clearly without oversimplifying it. My approach is tailored to each clients needs and prioritizes strengthening clarity and storytelling while maintaining scientific accuracy and attention to detail.
Alongside consulting, I write short-form articles that summarize and interpret recent high-impact papers, adding context and perspective to help readers understand why the work matters.
